When you think about Mother's Day gifts, flowers, chocolates and wine immediately come to mind. It's no surprise. Everyone supermarket sells them, and you can find flowers, chocolates and wine to suit almost any budget. And let's face it, it can sometimes be difficult to think of the perfect gift for mum. It's a little easier if you know what your mother wants, but most of us have heard the words 'I don't want anything.' Not helpful. (And often not true!)
If you're still stuck for inspiration, these foodie gifts will earn you guaranteed brownie points, whether your mother is an avid cook or just a passionate eater!
1. For The Tech Obsessed Foodie
I'm a little biased, but I love that all my favourite recipes are available online. While my bookshelves still heave under the weight of my cookbook collection, there's nothing quite like the convenience of having all the recipes I love in the one place. If you're like me though, kitchen spillages are more of a regular occurrence than they should be. Keep your tablet safe while you cook with this gorgeous and stylish tablet stand from Ben di Lisi.
2. For The Chocoholic
Subscription boxes are big business these days. From beauty products to socks, it seems there's nothing that can't be turned into a subscription service. When it comes to food, there are endless subscription box options, but our favourite will satisfy even the biggest chocoholic in your life. Hotel Chocolat's Tasting Club subscription isn't cheap, but your mother will get the chance to choose her favourite selection (from mellow to boozy and everything in between) which will arrive every 4 weeks. (Post is so boring these days, isn't it?) If you're lucky, she might even share!
3. For The Chef
If your mother is forever in the kitchen, trying out new dishes and whipping up something delicious for dinner every night, she'll love having fresh herbs on hand. These cute herb planters will add a pop of colour to her kitchen, and if you add some potted herbs (we'd recommend thyme, parsley and basil) your mother will have everything she needs to add buckets of flavour and freshness to her meal.
4. For The Baker
If you're making a tart, you'll usually need to bake your pastry case blind. I remember using a box of marrowfat peas as a teenager to weigh down the pastry, and more recently I've used rice. Anything dried and heavy can be reused time and time again, buy why not treat your mother to a tub of baking beans that are designed to conduct heat and help her create crisp pastry every time? This is the type of gift that your mother might not think to buy for herself, but if she's an avid baker she'll love it.
5. For The Food Lover
A magazine subscription is the gift that keeps on giving. Even as an adult I always get excited when my copy of Easy Food magazine arrives every month. Dress up the gift a little by adding a bar of your mother's favourite chocolate and some fancy tea bags so she'll have the perfect excuse to sit back and relax when her magazine arrives. Delicious Magazine offers both print and digital subscriptions so there's an option to suit every mother.
6. For The Cookbook Obsessed
While the internet is crammed with delicious recipes, there's something so relaxing about leafing through a new cookbook. Here are five of our favourites:
The Cardamom Trail: Chetna Bakes with Flavours of the East by Chetna Makan
Recipes from My Mother by Rachel Allen
Taste of Persia by Naomi Duguid
Scratch by Maria Rodale
The Virtuous Tart by Susan Jane White
7. Homemade Food Gifts
There are times when a homemade gift is very much appreciated, and Mother's Day is one of those occasions. A homemade gift is so much more personal than anything you can buy, and if you have little kids, they'll love baking up a batch of cookies to present to mum on Mother's Day. These recipes are all simple to make and are sure to make your mother smile.
Nutty Chocolate Truffles
Chocolate Stout Truffles
Lemon and Almond Cookies
